We are taught to work for money!
School teaches us
Parents teach us
Society teaches us
We’re not just taught it, we’re judged on how successful we are at it!
- School grades (we learn that we are measured by our achievements)
- University degrees (we learn to specialise, to earn more money)
- Society (we learn that we’re expected to fit in)
- The workplace (we learn that our worth is based on promotions and salary increases)
We are taught that our role in life is to;
- Learn how to work to earn money
- Be told what to do by someone else
- Get a good job
- Sell our time to spend 40, 50, 60+ hours a week working for money
- Earn enough money to put a roof over our head, food on the table and pay the bills
In return we;
- Get paid what someone else thinks we’re worth
- Maybe get take a holiday once or twice a year – if we’re lucky and can afford it
- (with an entitlement on average of 25 days per year, out of the 280+ that we work – that’s less than 10%)
Until;
- Someone decides that we’re too old and no longer needed in the workforce
- Then we’re kindly invited to retire with little (if any) regard for whether we can afford to actually live without the income from our work
I don’t know about you, but that feels like a shit deal to me!!
We are taught that taking our place in society and in the workforce is more important than figuring out how we actually want to spend our life (this one precious life that is fleeting and beautiful).
We are taught that those things are more important than our own happiness.
We are not taught how to be happy.
We are taught how to take our place in society and ‘make do’.
So, yeah, as I said, a shit deal!!
We are taught to work for money.
How about, instead, we learned how to make money work for us?
Learning about ways to have money coming in, whether we work or not.
Having enough money to actually spend our life doing something we want to do, instead of having to prioritise our time on working to earn money, to spend what little money we have on just paying bills, buying food and putting a roof over our head?
I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a much better (fairer) deal to me?!
But, they don’t teach us how to do that!
- They teach us how to comply.
- They teach us how to take our place.
- They teach us to do as we’re told.
- They teach us how to fit in.
Do you like the idea of spending your life working for money (and always worrying about it).
Or do you prefer the idea of having your money work for you (and not worrying about it), so you can spend your life doing more of the things that really matter to you?
I know which I’d prefer……and that’s what I’m learning to do.
